Growth Paradox | Reimagining Landscapes

The Asia-Pacific Region, home to over half of the world’s population, is characterized by a remarkable diversity of landscapes, climates, cultures, and traditions. However, this region’s rapid economic growth over the past few decades has brought challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, dilution of traditional knowledge systems, and widening socioeconomic disparities.

Amid these pressing issues, the time has come for landscape architects to ask critical questions: What kind of growth are we pursuing, and who benefits from it?

This conference aims to examine the “Growth Paradox” through ecological, sociocultural, economic, and philosophical lenses. The focus will be on reimagining growth in ways that enhance human well-being while ensuring the continued flourishing of both human and nonhuman species.

Positioned at the intersection of urban development, environmental stewardship, and community design, landscape architects are uniquely equipped to lead this vital conversation.

Need for Re-examining the Development Paradigm: Diverse ecosystems, contexts, and tensions
Investigating how various ecosystems and communities are impacted by current growth and development models, which frequently result in imbalance and conflict. This sub-theme challenges us to critically define the meaning of progress and calls for the profession as a mediator between social and ecological systems.
Cultural and Regional Contextuality: A tool for rethinking growth
Landscapes are not just ecological systems—they are also cultural expressions. Regional customs and practices often embody sustainable ways of living with the land, passed down through generations. Designing with these in mind creates landscapes that are rooted in place, rather than imposed upon it. These cultural and regional identity prevents homogenization, revive vernacular ecologies, and provide a tool for rethinking “growth” as regenerative rather than expansion.
Ecological and Social Ethics : Human as a part of the larger network
Acknowledging the interconnectedness of all living systems and challenging human-centric worldviews, the theme encourages ethical, inclusive design methods that are just, uphold social justice, and balance ecological rhythms at all scales. This invites landscape architects to reimagine their role not merely as designers of space for people, but as stewards of life in all its forms—creating places that are fair, healing, and alive.
Questioning the Status Quo : The need for a paradigm shift; experiments and overlaps in pedagogy, practice, and research
Challenging the pedagogy, practice, and research, this sub-theme encourages the profession to evolve boldly that match the urgency of today’s changing needs. To change the way that
